Can a Defeated Us Candidate Run Again?

Jeff Rose, chair of the Buncombe County Democratic Party, says registering unaffiliated is not the way for Dems to defeat Madison Cawthorn.

Jeff Rose, chair of the Buncombe County Autonomous Political party, says registering unaffiliated is non the way for Dems to defeat Madison Cawthorn.

Democrats, unaffiliated voters, and many Republicans in Western N Carolina tin all agree on one thing: we deserve real representation in Congress.

The reality is that the best thing District xi Democrats and unaffiliated voters can do to beat the Republican nominee in November is to start acting like we can win. So why are some Democrats and left-leaning unaffiliated voters acting like Representative Madison Cawthorn is "unbeatable" in the general election?

Facing a crowded primary field, legal trouble, charges that he abandoned voters in the commune, and repeated rebukes past prominent members of his own party, Representative Cawthorn conspicuously lacks the dominant grip on District 11 that his predecessor held for eight years.

Court-ordered districts in 2020 made the maps fairer and the latest NC Supreme Court rulings have ensured the lines for 2022 are even closer to accurately representing the district. Despite still beingness considered a Republican-leaning district, Cawthorn'due south antics alienate him further every day from his ain political party and from contained voters.

Democrats in District 11 take the all-time field of candidates I've seen in years, all of whom are motivated to do what is best for the residents of WNC. That's a huge contrast from the other side of the aisle, where conspiracy theories and manufactured culture wars seem to affair more than the daily lives of potential constituents.

Even so the prevailing wisdom amongst a pocket-size but vocal crowd of Democratic and unaffiliated voters is that our "but run a risk" to have amend representation in Congress is to vote in the Republican chief against Cawthorn.

Opinion: Madison Cawthorn tin't come across aforementioned minimum standards of 18-twelvemonth-olds in military

As well: Opinion: Lying, propaganda have go important tools of some politicians

The theory, as outlined in John Boyle'due south March 12 column comes around every election. As Buncombe County Democratic Party Chair since 2017, I've heard every statement for it.

Put quite but - it just doesn't work, which is why there is never whatsoever true organizing effort behind it.

Voter history records indicate that merely over i,300 unaffiliated voters across District 11 picked a Democratic master ballot in 2018 and a Republican main ballot in 2020. Merely in the 2020 Republican Congressional chief, over xc,000 votes were bandage, and Cawthorn won a runoff by well-nigh two:one.

This kind of strategy might piece of work to influence a race the size of the Woodfin Lath of Commissioners, where winning candidates needed just over 600 votes to come out on top, but in a hotly scrutinized race with 8 candidates, it's leap to neglect.

Worse, information technology perpetuates the idea that voting is transactional, that supporting candidates who align with your values doesn't matter. It furthers the stereotype that politics is some big game rather than a adept faith public fence of ideas and policy that voters in the district want to run across.

Voters will have far more impact on the overall political mural of WNC by voting for and engaging with candidates who truly correspond their values, non playing contemptuous games with ineffective primary voting strategies.

It's true that Northward Carolina's primary system allows unaffiliated voters to pick which ballot they vote on in the chief. But that choice is all-or-cipher; yous tin can't cull which contests to vote in the Republican master and which to vote in the Democratic ones.

In counties like Buncombe, choosing to vote in the Republican primary against Cawthorn ways you won't have a say in contested primaries for Autonomous nominees in the sheriff and district attorney races or in Senate District 49. That may be fine with you lot, if y'all lean bourgeois, only if you're a left-leaning unaffiliated voter or a Democrat considering a registration change, y'all should think twice before giving up your voice.

Ultimately, one of the biggest issues plaguing local elections across Western North Carolina and America is the increased nationalization of local politics. The answer isn't more of the kind of power politics and plots portrayed in House of Cards or Due west Wing.

It is choosing the candidates that yous actually want to represent you and making a case for why.

And then please, when y'all vote on May 17 (or early vote betwixt April 28 and May 13), choose the primary for the party that about closely aligns with your values and vote for the candidates you'd most like to see represent you lot.

Tell your friends and neighbors why and don't let anyone brand you feel shy about picking the candidate you believe in, even if you think it's a long shot.

Engaging in politics is much more than rewarding when you lot choose to vote for the candidates who will help build your earth up rather than vote confronting the ones who will tear information technology downwards.
