[Note:  CAS has temporarily lifted IP restrictions due to COVID, and a proxy connection is non required at present.]

To become to all our licensed resources while outside the campus network, yous must use our Proxy Server to establish a session that carries a recognized UT Austin IP accost.  Two methods:

  • Follow a link from any Library web folio, itemize record or database directory, and enter your UT EID and countersign when prompted.  Multifactor authentication with Duo is so required.
  • Bookmark this link in your browser: http://ezproxy.lib.utexas.edu/login?url=https://scifinder.cas.org

VPN volition not work for this purpose, and will interfere with a proxy connection.  Go out VPN and proceed through your local network to establish a proxied connection via links on the Libraries' pages.

Coming from another institution?

If y'all're new to UT but used SciFinder at a previous institution, your one-time account won't piece of work hither.  Create a new i by registering higher up with your utexas.edu email address.  TIP:  If your web browser "remembers" and automatically enters your old SciFinder login ID and password, you'll have to articulate that out and update it with your new 1.

scifinder small logoImportant Differences in SciFindern

The new interface is VERY different from the "classic" version, especially in how it searches for references using keyword terms, and how it sorts results by relevance.  Be certain to consult the Aid pages to improve your chances for a successful search.

  • The main References Search box supports Boolean operators (AND, OR, Non), nesting with parentheses, and wildcards.  None of these were available in the former version.  Just:  Boolean operators are not functional in the Advanced search fields or the "Search within Results" filter.
  • Multiple terms entered in the chief Search Box are connected with an implied OR operator.  This is not intuitive or helpful (almost other familiar databases and search engines use an implied AND).  If you want all the terms present in your results, apply the AND operator or enclose phrases within quotes.  Case:
    • ionic liquids -- (finds all records with either ionic or liquids)
    • ionic AND liquids -- (finds records with both words somewhere in the tape)
    • "ionic liquids" -- (finds the bound phrase as entered, including "liquid" in the singular)
  • Relevance ranking of reference results is by black-box algorithm.  (The classic version sorted past reverse date, based on a proximity histogram the user could choose from.)  Re-sorting by reverse date may be advisable.
  • Writer name searching is more than complex and less intuitive than earlier, especially when trying to include alternate forms of a name.
  • Searching by publication information (journal, yr, book, etc.) is still possible only different.

Sources of Assistance and Training

What's in SciFinder?

SciFinder is the all-time place to start your search for inquiry-level chemical information. It provides integrated access to these Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) databases, plus Medline:

SciFinder vs Reaxys

SciFinder and Reaxys (incorporating Beilstein and Gmelin) are complementary resource, and although there is some overlap the two are quite different in their respective literature coverage, and the ways they register compounds and index reactions. It's appropriate to consult both databases for the virtually complete coverage of compounds, reactions, and properties.

Off Campus access easier during COVID situation

CAS has temporarily lifted the IP address restrictions during the pandemic work-from-domicile menses, but plans to reinstate IP limits as of Apr iv, 2022.  This means that you don't need to log in via the Libraries proxy server, but you will still demand your SciFinder ID and password.  Nevertheless, links to total text licensed content from within SciFinder won't work unless you're in a proxied session.

SciFindern at UT

SciFinder account holders at UT Austin take access to both the original and new versions of SciFinder.  CAS is currently rolling out a new interface called SciFindern (yes, that'due south a superscript "n").  The "classic" SciFinder Web interface is no longer being enhanced, although the bibliographic, substance and reaction information are fully upward to engagement.  There is no firm retirement date for the archetype version at this fourth dimension, only it will probably go abroad in 2022.
